Discovery Learning

Through Discovery Learning, our Year 7–8 students take on the role of teachers, planning and delivering engaging lessons for our Year 0–2 students. Lessons often connect with the younger students’ classroom programmes or focus on developing foundational skills such as drawing, cutting and physical activity. Many of the learning experiences incorporate STEAM, providing opportunities for students to explore, create, problem-solve and work collaboratively.

Our Year 7–8 students have designed and delivered a wide range of practical learning experiences. These have included construction challenges such as creating marble runs, hands-on science experiments, developing throwing and passing skills, painting and craft activities such as making paper flowers and moving paper people. These experiences give our younger students opportunities to learn through doing, while encouraging our older students to think carefully about how they explain, demonstrate and support learning.

This programme provides a valuable opportunity for tuakana–teina and reciprocal learning. Our youngest students benefit from developing new skills and learning alongside positive role models, while our Year 7–8 students strengthen their leadership, communication and mentoring skills. Through these experiences, students from across the school learn with and from one another, building connections and a strong sense of belonging.
