Session 1: Tuesday 27th The Galaxy, Wednesday 28th The Pod
Kia ora,
Your child is participating in a 4 session programme called School CatchIT run in conjunction with the University of Auckland Statistics Department, and the Pest Free Auckland initiative. It teaches students how to think like a scientist whilst learning about New Zealand’s natural environment and how to protect it.
The year 5-6 team will be starting the programme next week and it will run over 4 sessions up until the end of this term.
In the first week your child will bring home a monitoring tunnel to see what footprints of pest animals might show up at night on your property. The monitoring cards and tunnels are returned a week later for discussion and the tunnels recycled for the next school.
In the second week the children will be offered free safe-setting mouse traps and rat traps in special pet-safe boxes. These traps and box can be kept by you permanently. If you do not wish your child to bring home the free traps please let your child's teacher know, otherwise all children will be sent home with them.
Pupils will collect data of any catches and these will be added up to show the total catch rate at the end of the programme in the form of a bar graph of your child’s results, and those of the class as a whole. Any other catches made by you, can be added into your child’s data.
Cheap possum, rat and stoat traps will also be available when children pick up their traps after school in the second week or by emailing Karen on karen@colgan.co.nz
